If you are
going to install fence posts, then the first thing that you need to check is
how deep the holes should be. Generally, corner posts must be set approximately
42 inches deep, because these posts carry the total weight of the fence boards.
The posts, which hold the boards, are known as line posts. These posts should
be dug to at least 30 inches deep.
The depth
of the holes does not ensure a successful set up, but the materials utilized
while setting the fence posts also play an important factor.
After
digging the holes, you should take precautions regarding water intrusion. You need
to make an arrangement so that water, which goes down the holes, will be
drained away and consequently avoiding wood-rot.
Next step
is to place approximately 15 inches of local stones in the hole. There is no
need to purchase these stones, as you will get them in the nearby area. After
that, you need to flatten the local stones into place. Do this after every 15
inches until the holes get filled. Wooden gate & fence posts will be in
level and secure if the stones are firmly in place.
Another
step in the installation of gate & fence posts is to fill the holes up
to 1/3rd of its depth utilizing concrete. After doing this, you need to make
sure that fence posts are at level. You should check the level of gate
& fence posts regularly.
Finally, to
take additional precautions over wood-rot, you need to pour a few inches of
concrete around the bottom of the post. It will make sure that the water will
definitely drain away from wood when it rains and will not go down to the
foundations of the wooden fence posts.
