Ways to Install Fence Posts

If you are going to install fence posts, then the first thing that you need to check is how deep the holes should be. Generally, corner posts must be set approximately 42 inches deep, because these posts carry the total weight of the fence boards. The posts, which hold the boards, are known as line posts. These posts should be dug to at least 30 inches deep.

The depth of the holes does not ensure a successful set up, but the materials utilized while setting the fence posts also play an important factor.

After digging the holes, you should take precautions regarding water intrusion. You need to make an arrangement so that water, which goes down the holes, will be drained away and consequently avoiding wood-rot.

Next step is to place approximately 15 inches of local stones in the hole. There is no need to purchase these stones, as you will get them in the nearby area. After that, you need to flatten the local stones into place. Do this after every 15 inches until the holes get filled. Wooden gate & fence posts will be in level and secure if the stones are firmly in place.

Another step in the installation of gate & fence posts is to fill the holes up to 1/3rd of its depth utilizing concrete. After doing this, you need to make sure that fence posts are at level. You should check the level of gate & fence posts regularly.

Finally, to take additional precautions over wood-rot, you need to pour a few inches of concrete around the bottom of the post. It will make sure that the water will definitely drain away from wood when it rains and will not go down to the foundations of the wooden fence posts.

Some of Pilasters Basics That You Should Know

Pillasters are the columns that are built with the walls of Greek fashioned houses. These pillasters can either be complicatedly ornate, or extremely simple. Though pillasters are quite like columns, there is one difference- pillasters appear as if they are rooted in the wall’s surface. Also, pillasters give the look of columns of the 16th or 17th century. They are narrow pillars and have ornate bottoms and tops.

They are made by machines and are fixed to the façade or the wall front. They can be used both outside and inside the house. In any case, they are used for decoration. If you want to add a European touch to your garden, porches, fences or garages, you can get pillasters for sale. For indoor purposes, pillasters can be added to fireplaces, room dividers, furniture, walls, cupboards or doorways.

Though pillasters in Sydney come in various designs, there are three main styles: Georgian Revival, Greek Revival, and Banded. Each design differs from the others by very subtle differences. There are many styles that have emerged by combining these three styles in different ratios. Some variations that you may find are Italianate, Italian Renaissance, Neoclassical, and Beaux Arts.

Pillasters in Sydney can be banded, and they blend vertical flat stripes that run throughout the length of the entire shaft. There are also some ornate rings going around the shaft that break the pattern in between. These rings are generally present at intervals of 3’ to 4’.

If you want Greek Revival pillasters for sale, your house will look like white marble. The shaft of the Greek pillasters is made using Doric, Corinthian, or Ionic style.
While Doric pillasters consist of fluted shafts that have plates at the top, the Corinthian ones have intricate patterns at both bottom and top. The ionic style has bottom and top of symmetrical spirals.

How do you Install Columns?

How do you install columns?

We’re often asked this question by owner builder and professional alike.

It all depends what you are using the columns for.

Whatever way you‘re using columns you must have a foundation for the columns to sit on.

This could be a cement slab, a concrete pad footing .

One case scenario where a costumer of ours wanted to build a colonnade come barbeque area.

On his country property, he had an area of 10 x 5 miters he wanted to cover.

Not knowing which columns to use we suggested to use our 250mm Tuscan columns at 2.5 mm centers at 2400 height. That would give him a clearance of 2.4 head room, he then would put a 250 x 50 mm timber beam on top of the columns then a 100 x 50 mm across the 5 miters span and he would have a structure of 2750 high.

Height and size of columns is very important for jobs like these, for example if he wanted to go higher with the columns, he would have to consider using a bigger column like our 300 mm Tuscan columns,

The spacing could still be at 2.4 centers but he could go as high as 2.7 mm and having a great looking job.

Of course if you are using the bigger size column you could spread them up to 3.5 centers and end up having a non symmetrical looking structure for this kind of area.

His dilemma was how do I install the columns?

Well it’s very easy once you have determined how many columns you need for the job,

Get your levels and dig the footings,

There are a few different ways of installing columns on footings or if you are doing footings and cement Slab as one pour.

Once you know where the centre of the column is you can EITHER

1> insert a plastic pipe in the slab or pad as you lay the cement and then take out as the cement has nearly gone off ( dried ) or leave it in, make sure that the hole in the footing is bigger than the pipe of column , When the cement is dry you are the ready to install the column .

The pipe in the column comes longer at the base, you then measure the depth of the hole in the footings and cut the pipe accordingly, then place the base plinth of column over the hole or slab and then the main shaft of the column is placed on top of the base plinth with the steel pipe going thru the base into the hole of footings

This is the hard way of installing especially if you are not using any lifting equipment.

2> you can also insert a spigot in the wet cement this spigott will go inside the column pipe and will keep the column from falling , I would suggest to have this spigot a minimum of 700mm above the footings or slab, very easy operation if you use lifting equipment

3> you can also have special brackets manufactured with a spigot welded on a steel plate with a hole in each corner of the plate to be dyna bolted on the slab or footings .

Installations the same as # 2

Now that the columns are in position you then place a steel bracket on the top of the column pipe and you are ready to put your beams on the columns.
